In October 1999, China entered the ranks of the aging population in advance, with 134 million people over the age of 60 years old, and the rapid growth rate of 3.2% per year. Experts predict that by 2010, the number of people over the age of 60 in China will reach about 400 million, accounting for more than 25% of the total population.

Reason to Design

My mom retired recently, and she stays at home every day. She feels like she has nothing she can do because she has contributed half of her life to doing one job. And she cannot catch up with the rapidly developing world. She thinks suddenly she has lost the meaning of life. And more and more retired senior people are facing the same dilemma in China. Some of them even have mental issues after their retirement.

Target Users

For the people like my mom, the retired senior individuals, there should be a unique educational service to help them study and keep up with the development of the world so that they can have rich and meaningful lives after retirement.

First-time users can create free accounts to activate more functions, like recording their learning experiences after class registration.

Users can use the accessibility functions to change the visual contrast of the texts on the webpage and help them view the texts more clearer.

In order to have a better understanding of the education for senior population. I analyzed three senior learning applications in the market to learn about their methods and their advantages and disadvantages.

I conducted a user interview to monitor the user going through the process of finding a senior learning service todiscover the user's pain points in the process and collect feedback from him for my design development.

03. User Survey

I created a user survey and conducted 18 user participants to learn about their expectations and barriers during the learning process. The data and feedback collected from the participants offered me inspiration for my design solutions.

Conclusion from Researches

The current senior learning platforms online can only remove a part of the barriers that stop senior individuals from learning because the classes they offer don't require much interaction and socialization with others so that they can be taken online. Nevertheless, senior people are expecting more diversified classes other than the existing classes online, and there is a need to help them fulfill their expectations with a specific-designed system.

The public transportation buses will pick up the senior users at the pick up points in each community and take them to one of the nearest learning facilities and take them back after their classes are over.

Usability Testing

In order to make the design applicable, I planned three rounds of usability testing to collect users' reactions and feedback based on my design. There are three standards for testing.

Searching Method

The previous version shows online and in-person selections in the information window, which might confuse the users. The new version offers the switch to help users separate online and in-person classes and conveniently find classes.



Instructor Selection

The previous version shows too much nonsignificant information, and the selection box is not visible enough. The new version only keeps the essential information in the front. Users can view more details about an instructor by clicking the profile link. Besides, the selection button is more visible.



Finding Facilities

The previous version contains two maps showing the available facilities and transportation pick-up points around a user's current location, making it hard for users to distinguish their functions. The new version combines the two maps' functions, making operating easier for users.

This project helped me learn that there should be more specific-designed services for senior populations in society. Education for seniors can help them live better and help society reduce pressure and develop healthily.

What's Next

This project focuses on service design, which is more about user experience and user research. It is necessary to conduct more user interviews and studies to collect essential data and information to keep improving the system to make it better for users' utilizations.
